It is usually set when dragging a solid object into an empty Body.

Data Base Feature ( Link): an external shape used as the first PartDesign Feature in the Body. The Tip indicates the final shape of the Body, which is shown in the 3D view when View Display Mode Body is set to Tip. Data Tip ( Link): the PartDesign Feature defined as "Tip", which is usually the last feature created in the Body.In addition to the properties described in Part Feature, the PartDesign Body has the following properties in the property editor. See active status for more information.Ī PartDesign Body ( PartDesign::Body class) is derived from a Part Feature ( Part::Feature class), therefore it shares all the latter's properties. If another Body is active, it will be deactivated. Double-click the Body in the tree view or open the context menu (right-click) and select Toggle active body to activate or deactivate the Body.If a Body already exists, it has to be made active before using New sketch. If no Body currently exists when New sketch is pressed, a new Body will be automatically created. An existing Body or PartDesign Feature cannot be selected when pressing Body. This Base Feature element is a simple reference to another object previously created or imported into the document. A new Body is created containing a single Base Feature. Alternatively, add a primitive PartDesign Feature, for example, Additive box.Now you can press New sketch to create a sketch in the Body that can be used with Pad.An empty Body is created and automatically becomes active. Right: the final object visible in the 3D view. Left: the tree view showing the features that sequentially produce the final shape of the object. Multiple bodies, and other Std Parts, can be placed inside a single Std Part to create a complex assembly. The Std Part is a grouping object intended to create assemblies it is not used for modelling, just to arrange different objects in space. The first one is a specific object used in the PartDesign Workbench, intended to model a single contiguous solid by means of PartDesign Features. These elements can be used as references to attach sketches and primitive objects.ĭo not confuse the PartDesign Body with the Std Part. The Body provides an Origin object which includes local X, Y, and Z axes, and standard planes. It can contain sketches, datum objects, and PartDesign Features that help in building a single contiguous solid.

Learning CAD, while not trivial, is worth the effort.A PartDesign Body is the base element to create solids shapes with the PartDesign Workbench.

Watch the following video to begin your journey into CAD. Once you understand the direct manipulation of an object, you will find that parametric modeling environments support increased complexity and precision.įreeCAD is an open-source parametric CAD application installable on Windows, macOS, or Linux. TinkerCAD is an online web application often taught in elementary schools. To learn the basics of CAD, combining objects by adding them together and subtracting later objects to create holes, it is often more comfortable, to begin with, a direct object manipulation program such as TinkerCAD. Many parametric CAD applications ask the user to start with a two-dimensional sketch, precisely drawn, and then the sketch is extruded or expanded into a three-dimensional shape. In parametric CAD programs, the software tracks the changes and allows the user to change earlier steps, and then the software reapplies the layer transformations or actions. Like building a model out of wood, where you want to change shapes at the bottom of the model, the user has to remove all of the wood structures constructed on top of this base. In many of these direct manipulation programs, once a step is complete, combining two items and then using a third object to model a hole in the combination, the user is unable to go back to the first step and make a change. Some CAD programs start with standard 3d shapes cubes, cones, pyramids, spheres, and more, and the user manipulates there objects by combining them to create the model. Why parametric CAD, and what is it? A simple definition of computer-aided design programs that use computer software to create 3d dimensional objects and plans divides these programs into two types. This series will teach FreeCAD to anyone interested in learning how to prepare 3d models from scratch for fun or profit.

While I have covered FreeCAD in the past, I have not created a series of videos that teach regular people about parametric (more on this in a minute) computer-aided design (CAD) from the very first step to advance techniques.
